Understanding the Different Types of Acne
Acne is not one single condition. There are multiple types of acne lesions, and understanding the difference can help guide more effective skincare choices and treatments.
Many people assume all breakouts should be treated the same way, but different forms of acne often respond best to different approaches.
Closed Comedones
Closed comedones are small flesh-colored bumps that form when pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells beneath the surface of the skin.
These are often associated with:
- congestion
- buildup
- improper exfoliation
- comedogenic products
Blackheads
Blackheads are open comedones where trapped oil oxidizes upon exposure to air.
These commonly appear around:
- the nose
- chin
- forehead
Papules and Pustules
These are inflamed acne lesions.
Papules are red, tender bumps without visible pus, while pustules contain visible white or yellow fluid.
Inflammation plays a significant role in this type of acne.
Hormonal Acne
Hormonal acne often appears around the lower face, jawline, and chin and may fluctuate around hormonal cycles or stress.
Cystic Acne
Cystic acne is deeper, often painful, and more inflammatory. These lesions can increase the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation and scarring.
Regardless of acne type, one of the most important factors in long-term skin health is protecting the skin barrier while treating breakouts.
At Healthy Skin Spa, I believe acne treatment should be intentional, supportive, and individualized rather than overly aggressive.
