Sneaky Breakout Triggers You Might Be Overlooking
What your skin could be reacting to—beyond your skincare routine
Sometimes it seems like you’re doing everything right—you’re eating well, using gentle products, staying hydrated… and your skin still breaks out.
You’re not alone. As a holistic skincare professional, I see this often—and the truth is, breakouts aren’t always about what you put on your skin. Sometimes, they’re about what’s happening inside your body or in your daily environment.
Let’s talk about a few commonly overlooked acne triggers that could be impacting your skin, and how to support your body and skin without fear or harsh routines.
1. Biotin and B12 Supplements
Biotin (vitamin B7) and B12 are often found in hair, skin, and nail supplements—and while they can be helpful for some, they can also contribute to breakouts in others.
Why?
Both biotin and B12 may stimulate oil production and affect skin bacteria, especially when taken in high doses. Some clients notice new or worsened breakouts within a few weeks of starting these.
Gentle guidance:
-
If you’ve recently added a supplement or energy drink and noticed more congestion or acne, consider pausing it for 2–4 weeks.
-
Talk with your doctor or nutritionist to check for imbalances (and remember: more isn’t always better).
-
Focus on whole-food sources of nutrients when possible, and only supplement when necessary.
2. Chronic Stress
Stress doesn’t just live in the mind—it lives in the skin. When your nervous system is in a constant state of alert, your body produces more cortisol (a stress hormone), which can increase oil production, slow healing, and lead to inflammation.
What that looks like:
-
Breakouts along the jaw, cheeks, or neck
-
Redness and reactivity
-
Skin that feels “tight but oily” or hard to calm
Holistic breakout support:
-
Integrate rituals that calm the nervous system: facial massage, deep breathing, slow walks, or grounding skincare routines
-
Treatments like lymphatic drainage and Gua Sha can help reset the skin and body from the inside out
3. Pillowcases and Towels
Your skin spends 6–8 hours pressed against your pillow every night. If that pillowcase isn’t clean—or is made of a fabric that holds onto oil, product, or bacteria—it can lead to persistent breakouts and irritation.
Suggestions:
-
Wash pillowcases 2–3 times per week
-
Choose natural, breathable fabrics like cotton or silk
-
Avoid using fabric softener or heavily fragranced detergent on anything that touches your face
4. Hidden Ingredients in Products
Even well-meaning “clean” or “natural” products can contain ingredients that clog pores, irritate the skin, or disrupt the skin barrier.
Some ingredients to watch for (especially if your skin is sensitive or acne-prone):
-
Coconut oil (highly comedogenic for many skin types)
-
Synthetic fragrance
-
Overuse of essential oils
-
Heavy silicones or waxes
-
Alcohol-based “clarifying” formulas
Supportive tip:
-
Read labels, but don’t panic. Focus on products that support your skin barrier, contain anti-inflammatory botanicals, and feel calming—not stimulating—on the skin.
-
Work with an esthetician who can help you choose ingredients based on your skin’s current state, not a trend.
