Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin: They’re Not the Same. Here’s How to Tell
“My skin is so dry.”
I hear this all the time, but sometimes what we’re actually dealing with isn’t dry skin at all.
It’s dehydrated skin.
The difference matters because dry skin and dehydrated skin don’t necessarily need the exact same products.
Dry Skin Is a Skin Type
Dry skin naturally produces less oil.
You may notice:
- Very little oil throughout the day
- Flaking or roughness
- A preference for richer moisturizers
- Skin that frequently feels tight
- Dryness that tends to be fairly consistent
Because dry skin is lacking oil, it often benefits from products containing nourishing emollients and ingredients that help reinforce the skin barrier.
Dehydrated Skin Is a Skin Condition
Dehydrated skin lacks water, and it can happen to virtually any skin type including oily and breakout-prone skin.
You might notice:
- Tightness even though your skin becomes oily
- Fine dehydration lines
- A dull appearance
- Skin that seems to “drink up” moisturizer
- Increased sensitivity
- Skin that feels different depending on the weather, your routine or your environment
This is why piling a thick cream onto dehydrated skin isn’t always the answer.
Sometimes the skin needs more water-binding hydration underneath the moisturizer rather than simply more oil on top.
Can You Be Both?
Absolutely.
Someone can naturally have dry skin and also become dehydrated.
Cold weather, indoor heating, hot showers, over-cleansing, excessive exfoliation and an overly aggressive skincare routine can all contribute to water loss.
That’s why I don’t love choosing skincare based exclusively on labels like “dry,” “oily” or “combination.” I want to know what your skin is actually doing.
My Favorite Way to Layer Hydration
For dehydrated skin, I generally prefer layers rather than immediately reaching for the heaviest cream possible.
A hydrating serum followed by an appropriate moisturizer gives you more control over the amount of nourishment your skin receives.
Jelly Drops Kakadu Plum + Mushroom Hyaluronic Acid Serum is one of my current favorites for this. It’s lightweight, fast absorbing and gives you that extra hydration layer without making the skin feel coated.
Follow it with a moisturizer based on what your skin needs.
If you prefer something lightweight, Repairing Hydrating Cica B5 + Hyaluronic Acid Cream gives you hydration with additional soothing support.
When skin is feeling particularly reactive or depleted, Vacation Skin Redness Recovery Overnight Mask and Moisturizer can be used at night for more intensive support.
For naturally dry skin that genuinely enjoys a richer moisturizer, Firm Believer Goji Stem Cell Face & Neck Cream offers a more nourishing option for both the face and neck.
You can also shop my Dry, Dehydrated & Compromised Skin collection for products I’ve selected specifically for skin that needs additional hydration and barrier support.
Don’t Forget About Your Habits
Products aren’t the only thing affecting hydration.
Very hot water can make dryness worse. So can repeatedly washing your face, using harsh cleansers or exfoliating too frequently.
If your skin constantly feels dry despite owning plenty of moisturizing products, don’t automatically add another one.
Look at the entire routine.
Sometimes the solution isn’t more skincare.
It’s using the skincare you already have a little differently.
